Dhaka Airport Fire: A Direct Blow to the Textile Industry's Logistical Core

The fire at Bangladesh's main airport exposed the vulnerability of global logistics chains. We analyze the impact on the textile industry and the lessons it offers for companies operating in international trade.

On Saturday, October 18, 2025, a major fire affected the cargo area (“cargo village”) of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. This complex serves as the country's primary air logistics hub and a critical node for global textile trade.

For over six hours, all air operations were suspended as more than 30 firefighting units and emergency forces worked to control the blaze. Material losses could exceed one billion dollars, impacting both essential exports and imports.

Impact on the Global Textile Industry

Bangladesh is the world's second-largest garment exporter, with over 80% of its international shipments being textiles. The affected airport area stored fabrics, ready-to-export garments, samples, and chemical materials used in manufacturing.

The fire occurs during the peak export season (October–December), which exacerbates the impact. Shipping delays and the loss of samples jeopardize contracts with international buyers, affecting thousands of factories and millions of workers in the sector.

“The loss of samples can mean losing future orders,” explained a spokesperson for the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association).

A Reminder for the Global Logistics Chain

Events like this reveal the global economy's dependence on concentrated logistics hubs. When a key facility fails, the effects propagate throughout the entire chain.

In Dhaka's case:

  • Hundreds of cargo flights were paralyzed.
  • Insurers and logistics operators face massive claims and delays.
  • Global brands are evaluating their exposure to infrastructure risks in supplier countries.

Logistical resilience is no longer merely a technical issue; it has become a strategic competitive advantage.
