Bahía Blanca: Road Conditions and the Logistics Impact Following the Storm

The storm's impact in Bahía Blanca has not only affected urban infrastructure but has also severely impacted national logistics.

The recent storm that struck Bahía Blanca on March 7, 2025, bringing over 300 mm of rain in less than 12 hours, caused severe damage to the road infrastructure, impacting national routes critical for logistics and commerce. Currently, the National Road Directorate has declared a state of road emergency for 180 days to expedite route recovery, authorizing direct contracts for their repair and reconditioning.

Trafficability Conditions on Main Routes

  • National Route 3: Sections with total closures and others passable with caution, particularly between Canal Maldonado and RN 33 Junction.
  • National Route 35: Total closure between km 26 – km 107, impacting access to La Pampa.
  • National Route 33: Passable with caution between Bahía Blanca and Trenque Lauquen.
  • National Route 22: Normal traffic flow up to Río Colorado.

To mitigate the effects of the road collapse, Bailey bridges are being installed at critical points, and work is underway to repair embankments and pavements. It is recommended to check the updated road conditions before traveling (see here).

Impact on National Logistics

Bahía Blanca is a critical hub for Argentine trade and industry. Its port is crucial for the export of grains, fuels, and industrial products, and disruptions on national routes directly impact the supply chain and the economy.

Specifically, National Route 3, which connects Patagonia with the rest of the country, is an essential corridor for the transport of goods and services. With several sections closed or in poor condition, delays in cargo distribution are causing multi-million dollar losses for productive sectors.

The industrial sector is also facing a significant impact. Several plants have had to suspend operations due to the inability to receive inputs or dispatch finished products. In the agricultural sector, difficulties in transporting harvests have led to substantial economic losses.

Damage Assessment and Official Response

Mayor Federico Susbielles estimated that the reconstruction of Bahía Blanca would require over 30 billion pesos, with 10,000 homes affected and the need for support from industrial sector companies.

Local, provincial, and national authorities are working on debris removal, service restoration, and assisting those affected to expedite recovery.

Conclusion

The impact of the storm in Bahía Blanca has not only affected urban infrastructure but has also jeopardized national logistics, leading to a halt in trade and production. The swift restoration of routes is crucial for re-establishing goods transportation and minimizing economic losses. Meanwhile, the logistics and production sectors continue to face operational challenges, awaiting a definitive solution in the coming weeks.

From Hanseatica, we wish to express our solidarity with all affected individuals, businesses, and workers. We understand that logistics is the engine driving the nation, and we are confident that, through the collective efforts of the community and authorities, Bahía Blanca will recover stronger than ever.
